Big Bethel Village is a 132-unit, innovative housing option designed to meet the needs of the growing aging population.
Today's seniors are no longer accepting the traditional definition of retirement. As the healthiest and fittest retirees in all of history, they are not interested in the routine of eating the same meals in the same dining room every night.
As a result, Big Bethel Village features around-the-clock staffing and security, various meal services, maid service, transportation and planned social activities. Meal services include options like carryout and bistros to supplement the formal dining option.
Larger spaces, a more residential feel, and greater selection of amenities are featured throughout the Community. Residents enjoy the use of libraries, computer rooms, beauty salons, craft rooms, wellness facilities and the like.
Big Bethel Village is a mission of the Big Bethel AME Church. The goal of the Church is serving and preserving the urban community for present and future generations through economic development and empowerment. Big Bethel Village is a tool for the church to serve the community, both members and non-members, and administer to their physical, spiritual, intellectual and emotional needs.
One of the many features that make Big Bethel Village such a valuable community asset is the way the Project was financed. An Urban Residential Finance resolution provided up to $14 million in tax-exempt funds.
A local Bank provided a small amount of seed money from a community grant program to provide the necessary start-up resources.
The result is that Big Bethel Village is a mixed income development with 75 percent of its units set aside for those whose incomes are 60 percent or less of the area's median income. Twenty five percent of the units are to be market rate and the rents will range from $485 to $1450 per month.
The beautiful landscape of the South provides the perfect environment for wandering paths and outdoor seating. Porches abound in the community. The front porch is shaded, and the resident rooms also have individual porches. The use of local brick and complimentary vinyl siding invoke a craftsman style and are low maintenance.
The main entry is capped with a three story cupola, which provides a bright, joyful interior atrium. The main staircase is showcased by this atrium, and was designed with traditional southern charm.
The interior is bathed in natural light from the atrium, filtering throughout the amenity areas. French glass doors serve to filter and control the natural light.
Big Bethel Village offers multiple floor plans, including studio and two bedroom apartments. Each plan is large enough for a double bed and the resident's own bedroom furniture. Gourmet kitchens provide residents with dining options and personal conveniences.
