The state funded College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences had a fixed budget of $51 million, requiring a response for $185 per square foot. The six-level building, built on a very small site includes offices, classrooms, and extensive laboratory space for training pharmaceutical and health science professionals other than physicians.
The primary goal of the design concept was to maximize efficiency.
The site is at the southern edge of a large medical campus incorporating the University's medical school and over a dozen hospitals. The building is divided into two parts, a linear office slab on the city side, connected to a squarish laboratory block adjacent to the campus. A linear circulation spine incorporating stairs and service elevators ties the two components together. A cross-axis is established with major entries to the city and campus by a two story "main street". The lab wing is organized around three mechanical and electrical service shafts.
To prevent unwanted access to research activities, the labs, meeting spaces and associated offices are housed in the upper three floors. One third of each of these floors was designed to house academic programs and administrative space that could be converted to research laboratories if the research programs required additional space. These spaces are already being converted to full laboratory spaces as a result of substantial cost savings during construction and a $2,000,000 NIH grant.
The lower three floors house classrooms, human performance labs, the auditorium and student support spaces. By clustering these high traffic areas, students and faculty have only to travel up one floor or down one floor from the entry level. A Pharmacy museum and pharmacy practice teaching lab are located along the main floor balcony that overlooks "main street". To activate "main street" in the lower level, the resource library, auditorium, and major classroom encompass it. The heart of the space is the student commons vending cafe that has become a popular hangout.
To enhance the instructional process, special attention was invested in the provision of a sophisticated information technology infrastructure that delivers voice, data, and video signals to nearly every room within the building. The technology package includes distance learning capabilities at the auditorium and two "smart classrooms."
The exterior of the office wing is expressed as brick-actually brick cast into pre-cast concrete wall bearing panels. Exposed sand blasted concrete bands express the exterior corridor system around the labs. The secure spine and vertical circulation is further defined by green colored metal.
The exterior materials are carried into the interior space which is enhanced by an art collection from a major donor.
The new building facilitates multi-disciplinary graduate teaching and curricula development, and enhances collaborative research activities. The net result of this effort is enhancing the quality of the University's educational programs, stimulating scholarly productivity, increasing extramural research funding for the University, and creating new jobs and educational opportunities for the State of Michigan.
