MHTN Architects took on the task of designing an elementary school that would take advantage of spectacular mountain and lake settings as well as using an abundance of natural daylighting. The schools, Overlake, Middle Canyon and Willow Elementary in Tooele, Utah are the result of MHTN's work.

The schools are organized around a primary circulation spine. The "Main Street" plan organization provides small, identifiable neighborhoods for grade school children allowing for closer age matches within each pod. The central "Main Street" corridor acts as the central organizing element within the school. The corridor is filled with light, color, and expansive views to the outside. It is a stimulating transition space between the classrooms, Media Center, Cafetorium and support spaces. The "Main Street" features high ceilings, clerestory windows, large walls for display of student work and large windows that open to landscaped courts and scenic views.

Separate entries for automobile dropoff are provided for the kindergarten and upper level grades. The Administration/ Reception area, located between these two entries, uses full height windows to convey a sense of openness while providing security to monitor all visitors. The Media Center and Cafetorium make use of natural light through the use of clerestory windows.

These schools demonstrate the team approach to school design. The Design Team worked closely with the school dis- trict, patrons, administrators, and faculty in developing their program, establishing goals and developing a Mission Statement that aided the decision making process from inception to completion.

The need to put in place three new elementary schools as well as a new high school, a large addition and remodel of another high school within a short time period with tight budget constraints required a cooperative effort of the Design Team. This team included the construction manager, architects, engineers, school district facilities personnel and administrators. Weekly meetings with all team members helped to monitor construction methods, material selections, cost estimating and schedule impacts.
