Ascension Of Our Lord Catholic Church in LaPlace, Louisiana, is a new church for 1,000 worshippers, completing a 20-year master plan for the Ascension Parish campus.
The new church is of a simplified early Christian basilica style, updated with a fan-seating plan to bring the congregation together in prayer during services. The roof trusses of wood clad steel recall the 14th century churches in Italy with arcades and arched side aisles providing a traditional feeling to the liturgical space.
The exterior of the church is brick, with a terra cotta colored metal roof. At the crossing of the nave is a major clerestory bringing natural light into the church sanctuary. The 75-foot tall bell tower houses a carillon and also serves as a porte-cochere offering an all-weather entrance to the church foyer.
