From the inception of the planning process the school district was determined to implement a team approach to the project. The first step was to bring the architect and construction manager onboard early to work in a collaborative effort with the administrative staff and teaching staff. This team approach encouraged active participation by the staff and allowed for an open exchange of ideas throughout the programming and schematic design phases. The district staff, architect, and construction manager also worked closely with the community during the formulation of the bond issue. The architect and the construction manager made several public presentations to obtain community input, which served to gain consensus for the prioritization of facility needs and played an important part in the creation of the new facility. The collaboration between the staff, school board, community, architect, and construction manager was initiated at the beginning of the preliminary planning stages and lasted through the construction period.

The new kindergarten and first grade center was initially designed to open with a capacity for 300 students, but core facilities have been designed to support upwards of 600 students long-term. The master plan allows for the flexibility to construct a third classroom wing as required to support increasing student enrollment. Spaces designed to accommodate planned activities combined with integrated technology provide the school with accommodations for successful program delivery. The educational program allows for 14 new classrooms, administrative space, a music room, library, gymnasium, and cafeteria to provide the students and staff the spaces needed for successful program delivery.

Simple forms were placed around a gently curved hallway running the length of the school, resulting in a simple, unique and playful solution to this kindergarten and first grade center. This was particularly appropriate for such young students as the curved hallway serves as the main circulation route and provides great orientation. For after hour events the library, gymnasium, and cafeteria are all accessible from the exterior and the main hallway while access to the academic areas can be fully secured. During the design phase there were multiple discussions that a child friendly atmosphere was truly desired for the new facility. This was achieved in part with the creative use of tapered brick columns at the elliptically shaped main entrance that furnishes an enticing focal point for the front of the campus. This interesting feature is repeated along the gently curved main circulation route at the interior of the building to provide an animated characteristic appropriate for the younger aged students. To further promote a child friendly environment, bright primary colors with intriguing patterns were introduced in the finish materials.

Safety, security and technology were key issues for the project. The drives for parent drop-off, school buses, and service areas were separated to provide safety to the students and to reduce traffic congestion. Placement of the playgrounds was given priority in the site development phase to eliminate the need for students to cross drives and ensure student safety. Careful thought was given to the positioning of the main office to allow monitoring of all incoming students and visitors to the school. Phones were provided in all the instructional classrooms to allow full two-way communication with the office, in case of an emergency, as well as a school-wide intercom system. Networked computers were planned for the library, computer labs and for every classroom.
