Waverly Woods Office Building #1 is a two-story, 24,000-square-foot office building which serves as the corporate headquarters for Harkins Builders. The site is carved out of a woodland site in the Waverly Woods Development in Howard County, Maryland. The site has to remediate a golf course edge, a wooded backside, and wetlands which surround most of the site.
The design of the building is meant to match the historic character of the nearby Waverly Mansion with Georgian detailing. The building is centered on the entry axis, and is framed by trees as one enters the site. The exterior and interior finishes are of a high quality in order to convey the Harkins’ corporate image. Brick and cast stone cover all of the exterior walls. The interior also has a high level of finish, including custom casework throughout to accommodate Harkins’ workflow needs.
The project design and construction was conducted using “fast-track” methods and an intense team approach. The schematic design was started in February 2000, allowing the building construction to begin in June of 2000. Harkins Builders took occupancy by December 2000.
This building is accompanied on the site with a second office building that compliments its historical characteristics, also designed by Probst-Mason, Inc.
