Brentwood Industries has been manufacturing high integrity plastic products since 1965. Their North American operations comprise four principle manufacturing sites including their facility in Reading, Pennsylvania. Cutler Associates was selected as Brentwood's design/builders because of their expertise in the tilt-up construction method. Brentwood owners had visited a manufacturing plant in California that produced a similar product to theirs and believed the style and layout of the building would suit their needs.

Cutler went to work designing a 205,000-square-foot manufacturing and 2-story office facility. The owner took advantage of the durability and flexibility of design the tilt-up concrete method offered plus opted to use insulated tilt panels to enhance energy savings. Fifty-foot by 50-foot column grid spacing throughout the warehouse and manufacturing area allowed the owner flexibility for the placement of storage racking and process machinery. The internal 26-foot clear height allows necessary flexibility for specialty process rooms, toilet/locker rooms and employee cafeteria. Reinforced in-floor machinery pits were poured to accommodate the height of the machines and to provide access to the equipment.

The nature of Brentwood's manufacturing process generates high heat levels in the facility. To alleviate the heat build-up, a series of eight 8-foot by 7-foot motorized wall louvers were installed on the east and west walls and interlocked with multiple roof fans, each of which circulate 44,000 cubic feet of air per minute. The system evacuates the heat and draws in fresh air for ventilation. Roof smoke/skylights were installed to bring natural light to the interior of the building.

Cutler Associates worked very closely with fire officials to design and install a fire system with twelve roof smoke hatches that can be opened by fire officials to release smoke and fumes from the building in the event of a fire.

The exterior of the building features horizontal rustications in the tilt walls. A three-color paint combination accentuates the rustications. Horizontal and vertical aluminum strip windows with colored reflective glass wrap around the building with a soaring 2-story glass entrance curtain wall. The rear of the building features five dock doors and one drive-in door. The office space includes a glass entry vestibule within a two-story atrium, open office space, private offices, meeting rooms and toilet rooms.
