The Santa Fe Christian School is an inter-denominational, college-preparatory school offering preschool through 12th grade. The campus is a collection of cottages built in the 1940's, Military School barracks built in the 1960's and temporary portables. The Santa Fe Christian School Library and Technology Center represents the first new building in a master plan that will result in the campus being 100% replaced with new buildings.
Dedicated in April 2001, this 14,800-square-foot facility has transformed the landscape of Santa Fe Christian. The new mission-style building includes five computer labs, a multi-media/distance learning center, a fully equipped digital video-editing studio and broadcast studio, study areas, research stations and more. With these new resources Santa Fe Christian now offers students Broadcasting, Graphic Design and Art Production and Digital Editing.
The Technology Center, on the lower floor, has four computer labs; one each for upper, middle and lower schools and a journalism lab, each fully equipped with up-to-date computers and a rear-projection, interactive "smart wall" for teaching. Also included is a Yearbook/Journalism/Graphic Arts Lab equipped with 24 student computers, loaded with the latest in publishing and graphic arts software.
A second facet of the new Technology Center is the multi-media, distance-learning center that is equipped with camera equipment, TV monitors, a front-projection "smart wall" and a Dolby Surround Sound System#. This center will be where multi-media presentations can be experienced in their full effect.
The final and most technologically advanced part of the new Center involves video technology: a broadcast studio, a video control room and a digital video-editing lab. The training offered to the students in this Technology Center will enable students to gain the knowledge at Santa Fe Christian to impact the secular media, and to be familiar with cutting edge technology.
The Library located on the top floor houses 30,000 books and periodicals along with a technology lab. Also included is a conference room, a computer lab for general student use, as well as study areas and an outdoor terrace overlooking the school's baseball field. The use of skylights and operable windows was included so artificial lighting is minimal and air conditioning is not required. Guidelines for the use of materials and sustainable design have been established for all subsequent buildings.
