The Patient Services Center (PSC) at Somerset Medical Center welcomes patients, visitors, physicians, staff and volunteers into this growing facility. The PSC serves as a congregation and disbursement point for such functions as Outpatient Registration, Diagnostic Services, parking and food services. Dozens of people pass through this new "lobby" each day.
The attached garage was designed to complement the existing structures and was done so by matching the brick and concrete elements of the Medical Center. The garage accommodates 350 cars and moving from the garage to the Medical Center and other attached buildings can be accomplished either outside or through a glass-enclosed link.
The interior space of the PSC was designed to be inviting and comfortable while offering the convenience of a welcoming front desk and clear signage directing newcomers to their destinations. A rotating, revolving door, accessible by wheelchairs allows guests to enter the lobby. Upon entering, guests can either proceed to the front desk with questions or view the overhead signage which directs them to Outpatient Registration and the like. Ample seating allows visitors to relax, while affording them the opportunity to view the entire lobby while waiting for someone they are meeting. The Medical Center permanently recognized its valuable donors with "fund-raising bricks" as part of the flooring. These bricks are clearly visible and the color chosen for them was incorporated into the overall color scheme.
The outside area adjoining both the PSC and the garage was laid out to provide easy access. Patients can be dropped off at the covered front door with the garage entrance adjacent. Upon discharge, the garage exit allows for pickups at the same weather protected front door.
BLM has provided planning and design services for Somerset Medical Center for 18 years. From master planning to architecture and interior design, BLM has worked in nearly every department of the Medical Center. The PSC ties many of the departments together and provides a clear "front door" for the Medical Center.
