When commissioned to design a "state-of-the-art" automobile repair facility, Don Stevens asked the client, Robberson Ford of Bend, Oregon, what prime elements they were looking for. Don had been involved in the design of several dealerships and vehicle repair facilities over the years, but "state-of-the-art" evokes fresh images. Don set about establishing the parameters toward a unique facility.

First, sales and client satisfaction videos from Ford Motor Company were reviewed to evaluate conditions that elicit positive responses from clients. Secondly, Don listened to the young, eager collision center manager and his past experiences with both good and bad facilities. Thirdly, layouts provided by Italy's Nova Verta for downdraft paint booths gave input toward various building footprints and vehicle movement systems. Lastly, the patriarch of the dealership provided advice on client needs and also the equally important staff needs and motivation factors.

These collision center factors had to also meld with a sister organization, used car sales. The important image aspect of this marriage is that used car clients must not see an image of wrecked vehicles being re-worked and resold. Conversely, clients concerned over the fate of their newly damaged vehicle should not feel as if the facility was really there to move formerly owned vehicles.

Creating a facility in which one could almost literally "eat-off-the-floor" was tantamount to the success of the repair and painting operations. No one wants to think his or her repairs are being done in an unkempt facility. A laser guided frame machine provides accuracy for repairs. The inclusion of the very best in paint booths not only is a sales device as a visually stimulating experience but also is highly efficient with technicians operating the painting process like an assembly line. 

The sloped floors throughout the shop allow for drainage to a recycling system that guarantees absolutely no contaminants go through the facility's sewage system. The overhead lighting system illuminates the true colors of any auto or truck, and large, overhead exhaust fans filter the air. 

The 45 degree entry layout pays homage to both parking for the used car sales and a covered estimating area for the collision facility. A receptionist then leads the customer to a relaxed, carpeted waiting area.

The workers have been provided with a very easily cleaned working environment and facilities such as a locker room and a sizable break room that doubles as a learning/meeting center. 

A blue and white color theme is used throughout as a means to form a direct tie to the new Ford Motor Company standards. At the same time, this facility was not only conceived, programmed and designed to tie to Ford, but to "raise the bar" for collision repair and vehicle painting in this geographic area. 

It's a far cry from the dingy shop with a side-by-side paint booth and a large fan blowing out the fumes.
