Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care Facility is a 138-bed skilled nursing facility in New Orleans developed on a collaborative basis by 16 Catholic religious orders to serve the needs of their elderly members. The ownership of the facility and the #cluster-nursing# model being used for care make Our Lady of Wisdom one of the first of its kind in the United States. The project was recently awarded a Citation for Design Excellence by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA). The facility has a residential character, focused on individual neighborhoods, and contains dedicated facilities such as a large Chapel and auditorium not normally found in a skilled nursing facility.
Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care Center consists of three 46-bed neighborhoods, divided into 18 clusters of 7-9 beds each. The neighborhoods are attached to a central core of commons and administrative functions. Each neighborhood has a satellite dining area, with a serving pantry and dishwashing room located within the unit. Meals are prepared in bulk in the main kitchen and then transferred to the neighborhood dining areas, where they are served to the residents at individual times, with special dietary needs attended to at the unit. The neighborhoods are self-sufficient, with bathing areas, support areas such as clean and dirty linen, supplies, and staff support all located within the neighborhood. The clusters all have lounge areas or living rooms within a few steps of the rooms within the cluster, and are close to the aide desk designed within each cluster. Finishes selected include welded sheet vinyl in resident rooms and dining areas, ceramic tile in all wet areas, and healthcare grade carpets in corridors, lounges, and common assembly areas.
A central courtyard is the focus of Our Lady of Wisdom, surrounded by a 150-seat Chapel and Sanctuary, a therapy clinic for program and rehabilitation services, a second story administrative area, a mental health wing, 200-seat auditorium, and an enclosed greenhouse. This facility enables religious communities to face together the challenge of providing state-of-the-art care for their elderly.
The facility is a 2-story structure reminiscent of the Italian Romanesque style. The 8-acre site is located on the campus of Our Lady of Holy Cross College in New Orleans, Louisiana.
