Live 'n Learn SMILE Center, Inc. is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Prior to its current location, two previous locations were rented while in search for an ideal setting and environment, as well as keeping within a budget. Given the opportunity to build, it was critical to take all the functional luxuries and necessities that were determined and combine them with cost effective and appropriate materials. TDI Construction Group, LLC was very instrumental in helping to achieve this goal with the design/build approach to the child care center in conjunction with architect Richard E. Hunter.
Together TDI and Hunter integrated the educational needs of the children through specifying and supplying durable products that were easy to maintain. Also provided were products that conformed with heavy children's use. TDI focused on product options that offer safety, durability, and child appropriateness. The possibilities were endless from the tiny toilets to the padded corners and carpeted walls.
The classrooms are designed with the needs of particular age groups and number of students in mind. Each room is durably constructed to accommodate teachers" needs while also providing ease of access. While still providing excellent child safety, each room is also designed to stimulate children's learning.
TDI's design inherently divided the school into two age groups (infants through toddlers, pre-schoolers through school age) with a hallway division and centrally located office. This was done in accordance with specific exterior playground needs and requirements of each of the age groups. Not only did this allow for the exterior materials and play space to specifically meet code, but it gave each room a personal entrance and exit onto their own playground which is a significant safety issue.
One major factor in the design and construction of this facility was the concern for a high quality HVAC system. Requirements were that the system accommodate typical heating and cooling but also would allow for individual temperature control in each room relative to room size and age of children. For this system TDI provided a Trane VAV system that allowed for all classrooms, offices, and support rooms to be separately controlled. Another major factor was to design a kitchen facility to feed over 140 children in a short period of time. This was done by incorporating the needs based on experience, the specific room user, and code requirements to design a more "commercial" and efficient work area.
TDI took into consideration the thoughts and wishes of the owner, producing a facility to be proud of. The needs of the parents, children and staff were readily met giving children a visibly secure and safe environment.
