The Skaggs Catholic Center provides educational opportunities from cradle to college for over 2,400 students. The 350,000-square-foot facility offers day care and pre-school at the Guardian Angel Pre-School, elementary classes at the Saint John the Baptist Elementary School and middle and high school curricula at the Juan Diego Catholic High School.
Drawing upon classic catholic elements from the past, and embracing solid catholic values and educational concepts of our times, the facility is designed to provide continuing opportunities into the future through incorporation of the latest technology.
Prior to the dawn of the Renaissance, the Catholic cloister and monastic traditions generated early catholic tenets of community, faith development and learning. The basic design concepts for the Catholic Center Campus were derived from these early cloister examples of space organization. Early cloisters not only provided a gathering place for the community, but offered shelter to the village and the traveler. In many instances, the central courtyard became the center of activity for the community.
In like manner, the Catholic Center is organized around a central courtyard, encircling the central public space on three sides, mimicking the cloister concept.
Symbolism plays a major role in the spatial organization of the campus. At the center of the campus, a cross-tower, anchors the site and provides a landmark for the surrounding community. On an axis directly east and west of this tower are the libraries of Saint John the Baptist Elementary School and Juan Diego Catholic High School. Each library takes full advantage of the majestic views of the Wasatch and Oquirrh mountain ranges. On a north south axis, forming a symbolic cruciform pattern on the courtyard, the chapel of the high school aligns with the location of the chapel of the future parish church.
Similar to a cloister, each function of the schools is clearly laid out and organized in a neighborhood, such as academic classrooms, visual and performing arts functions, large gathering spaces and administrative functions. A primary objective in this layout was to bring as much light into the spaces as possible. This was achieved by utilizing clerestory windows into corridor and common spaces, locating classrooms on wings with exterior windows, using monumental curtainwall glazing in selected spaces, employing stained glass artwork in sacred spaces and succesfully using the concept of borrowed light for interior spaces.
The material pallet blended earth toned masonry, clear anodized aluminum framing and aqua glass on the exterior with accents of the exterior masonry, honed white concrete block and selected accent colorings on the inside. For cost effectiveness, a steel frame was used to allow for the future flexibility of the interior spaces. Gypsum board interior partitions were also used for similar reasons, with the understanding that discipline at the school would preserve and protect the spaces.
The 57 acre site is fully landscaped and provides a soccer stadium with a track and grandstand, football stadium with grandstands, varsity baseball field, varsity softball field, numerous other baseball, football, soccer fields for little league and community use, and a jogging/riding trail incorporated as part of the Draper City's recreational trail system.
