With booming business and lack of space to accommodate growth, HKI Associates, Inc., was hired to provide architectural design services for a $2 million addition to the Makoy Center. The project neighbors a residential area. The task was not only to design a facility that meets the client's needs but one that should be a good corporate neighbor.

The facility was designed to accommodate key programmed areas such as the main hall, kitchen, bar, storage, conference room, office, and mezzanine. To optimize functional relationships, common amenities such as a storage area and a kitchen were strategically located to be shared by both the old and new main halls. The new parking lot was an extension of the existing one. It wraps around the existing building, giving the new building the appearance of separateness. Leading into the hallway is the vestibule/foyer. The foyer presents an unimpeded circulation hub from which access could be gained to the new main hall, mezzanine, restrooms, and old main hall. The main hall seats up to 1,800 people for sit down functions. It is designed with functional flexibility and features a column-free hall that could be subdivided or doubles as a large exhibition hall for a single exhibition event. The large hall is complemented with a mezzanine that overlooks it. The mezzanine is designed as an integral part and is also used in conjunction with the main hall but could be closed off with collapsing sound attenuation partitions to function as a single, separate event space.

The goal of being a good corporate neighbor is not lost in the design. A design strategy that located secondary and tertiary functions around the main hall was employed to help contain the sound generated by the audio equipment. Furthermore, an acoustically integrated design in which sound transmission control techniques such as massive impervious split-face concrete block units, layered drapery at the stage, coffered acoustical ceiling tile etc., were all used to avoid being a public nuisance to the neighbors. Besides, split-face concrete block units added texture to the interior, to complement the smooth painted gypsum wall boards, patterned parquet, the variegated carpet and the velvety drapery. The fire separation wall was taken advantage of to prevent sound transmission between the new and the old Main Halls.

Food preparation occurs in the centrally located kitchen to serve both the new and the old banquet halls. The kitchen has 26 linear feet of kitchen hood, which features a dry chemical fire extinguishing system. Sprinklers were selectively designed and located at all service areas. The owner realized a $100,000 savings for not using the city water supply for fire protection, but instead utilized an adjacent retention pond to obtain the required protection water supply.

The electrical systems for the expansion portion of the Makoy Center includes power distribution, lighting and fire alarms. A brand new electrical distribution system accommodates both the current power needs and provides for future growth of the Makoy Center.
