Media Stage is a company that does audio, video, lighting and computer graphics support for meetings, conferences, product shows and special events throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America. The operation requires the storage of audio-visual equipment, space for testing the equipment, and offices for computer graphic design and administration.
The program called for a 2-story office and warehouse building with first floor office space for administrative and design staff, and a warehouse storage space with two
raised and two ground level loading docks in the first floor, and second floor air conditioned storage space for videos and other sensitive equipment. The owner requested that the warehouse have natural lighting.
The site is a corner parcel (International Parkway & NW 4th Street) in an office corporate park in the city of Sunrise, Florida. Generous landscaped setbacks are required by the corporate master plan. The main entry faces the street corner of the site, where the office part of the building is accessed. The warehouse, service road and loading docks occupy the building rear. There is parking at both ends of the building for employees and visitors, and driveways provide access to the site from the streets bordering the parcel on two sides.
The office program comprises an entry/reception, three executive/administrative offices, general manager's office, open office space for staff, computer graphics design room, and equipment testing room, employee lounge and restrooms. The building plan was designed so that the offices get a view of the lushly landscaped exterior areas. The open office area has a high ceiling with three large windows that allow light and views from the interior circulation space and manager's office. The building was also provided with 34, 4-foot square glass block windows that provide light to the warehouse, a large expanse of glass in the president's office, regular single hung windows at the other offices, and a special curving glass block wall at the employee lounge. This achieves a rhythmic composition on the exterior elevations as seen from passing cars on the streets bordering the site, and identifies the different spaces and functions inside the building. A tower 32-feet above the high ceiling at the reception/waiting area makes the corner of the building at the entrance prominent. The employee lounge has a high ceiling, a curving glass block wall and two glass block windows above, bringing in lots of soft diffused light and making this space unique and memorable.
