Wake County Public School System employed Innovative Design and Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee to design a combined elementary and middle school campus. The middle school design was based upon the Durant Road Middle School prototype, another Wake County school, and the elementary school was designed by PBC+L. Both schools share a bus and service drive, recreational areas, and a central energy plant. The elementary school was modified to use many of the same exterior materials, finishes, colors and fenestration details to closer resemble the middle school.

The Dillard Drive Middle School plan incorporates daylighting in the majority of the classrooms, the gymnasium, dining room, and media center. Advanced lighting controls, fiber optic networking, automatic environmental controls, and an energy management system were designed to interface with the school's central management system.

Dillard Drive Elementary School is based on a prototype developed for Wake County Public Schools. The school system has repeated this design four times in the past three years. The flexibility of floor levels makes this layout adaptable to a variety of site conditions.

Core facilities stack along the main circulation spine with media center, plant operation services, child nutrition, physical education, and administrative functions grouped on one side of the corridor, and teacher's lounge and common core classrooms on the other. K/1 and 2/3 classroom wings extend perpendicular to the main circulation spine while the 4/5 classroom wing runs parallel. The facility also includes a 670-square-foot Ready-to-Learn Center.

Orientation of the building leaves the back of the site available for play areas and classroom wings isolated from vehicle noise. Such treatment allowed minimal disruption of the natural areas at the perimeter of the site.

These energy efficient schools are now saving over $1.6 million anually. They are consuming 22% to 64% less energy to comparable schools because they are daylit, and have reduced carbon dioxide emission by 180,000 tons and oil imports by 6.7 million gallons.
