Bartow Memorial Hospital is a new 125,000-square-foot health care facility located in Bartow, Florida. It replaces an antiquated 75-year-old, 54,000-square-foot building. The hospital accommodates 56 inpatient beds, including a 6 bed intensive care unit, a labor and delivery suite with C-section room and 4 operating rooms. The two-story facility, and an adjacent new 23,000-square-foot medical office building are sited on a greenfield pasture in Polk County.
A design that complemented the character of their city was critically important to the hospital staff. Bartow is a small rural town with a historic downtown main street, impressive landmark buildings, and oak shaded neighborhoods with plantation and cracker style homes. The design team responded by integrating elements that create a sense of harmony with the architectural style of nearby downtown and neighborhoods. Two story patient wings mirror the scale and proportion of main street buildings. Stair towers relate to traditional forms such as clock towers. Roof brackets are derived from the exposed structure of local rural buildings. Silver metal roofs on towers and canopies are reminiscent of those used widely throughout the area. Entrance canopies are the institutional equivalent of a residential front porch, creating an impression of welcome and hospitality. Incorporating familiar elements into the building facade helps to give patients and their families a comfort level during what can be a very stressful experience.
Functionally, the floor plan addresses critical areas of hospital design: patient and staff flow and future expansion. Outpatient Diagnostics and Treatment, Surgery, Emergency Department, Physical Therapy and public spaces are immediately accessible to the front entrance. Departmental zoning aids in separation of public and patient traffic with minimal "crossovers." Vertical circulation is segregated between an elevator bank that serves visitors and one that serves staff and patients.
Horizontal expansion is anticipated by the siting of the building and configuration of corridors, especially in the surgical unit. The cruciform patient wing arrangement will accommodate one additional second floor nursing unit. The building structure is capable of supporting third floor expansion.
An important goal for the design and construction team was meeting the Owner's schedule expectations. Contractor selection at project initiation allowed real-time cost estimating as the design progressed. Partnering sessions created the opportunity for all stakeholders to come together as a team. "Early release" civil and foundation packages were prepared so that permitting and sitework could commence while construction documents were completed. When negotiations for the original hospital site fell through during the design development phase and a new site was selected, the floor plan was reversed and the entire site design reworked in only 4 weeks. Once final building permits were secured, the facility construction was completed in 14 months. "Heroic" efforts included flying in a manufacturer's representative from Canada on a half-day's notice to certify imaging equipment for state code officials, days prior to the hospital's opening.
Each project, no matter how large or small, is essentially the sum of three components: scope, schedule, and budget. By working together as a team, the Owner, Architect and Contractor were able to create a building that is functionally successful, delivered on time, and under budget.
