The Greene Memorial hospital Beavercreek Campus ambulatory surgery Center and Medical Office Building is the second component in what is envisioned to be a seven building medical campus. The 25 acre site is located in a newly developing suburban area approximately 15 minutes form the main hospital complex in Xenia, on the outskirts of Dayton, Ohio.
Phase one of the development of the campus begun with providing urgent care and imaging services. Phase two brought on line Ambulatory Surgery, Physical Medicine, Laboratory services and Physicians' Office Space. The overall Master plan identifies building locations and points of connectivity, but allows Greene Memorial the flexibility to evaluate the services to be provided in subsequent phases. The goal is a comprehensive health care center in a customer friendly campus environment.
Built on the campus five years earlier, the first building was nearly domestic in scale and employed a composition of traditional suburban elements and details to define it. The architectural problem the design team faced was to connect a much larger second component that complicated both the original building and the surrounding subdivisions. It was necessary to employ a vocabulary appropriate for a building of larger scale and one that could be drawn upon for subsequent buildings. The strategy that emerged took values and expression established in the Arts and Crafts movement of the late nineteenth century and placed them in modern form.
The 45,000 square-foot, three-story building was broken down into three distinct volumes to help reduce the scale. The main volume contains the entrance lobby and two floors of medical offices. The third floor is devoted to the building's air handling systems, which are vented by large dormers expressed within the tower and roof areas. The Town of Beavercreek does not permit visible mechanical
equipment. The surgery center is housed within a one-story "outbuilding" behind. The functional requirement of a two-lane, covered drop-off area is satisfied by a pyramidal open rafter and exposed cedar deck structure. Large bundled cedar columns collared by cruciform steel plates support it. The canopy is clearly visible as a destination upon approaching the campus.
The honest structural detailing of the covered entrances sets up a vocabulary used both inside and outside the facility. The exterior of the new building continues the use of a masonry water table and first floor punched windows employed in the original. However, the second floor windows are mostly large expanses of curtain wall filling in between columns and allowing the roof's large overhangs and soffitt beams to float over them. Wood detailing was carried to the interior creating a sense of comfort and quality in the lobby and pubic spaces. The open stair off the main lobby visually links the two floors of physician offices while fixtures, handrails and signage subtly lend a very modern aesthetic.
