COPPER-CLAD TILES PROVIDE STUNNING ROOF FOR UNIVERSITY MUSIC HALL
Prestige Elite copper-clad tiles by Tegola® Canadese from Italy, distributed nationally by Petersen Aluminum Corporation, were selected to provide a stunning roof for the University of Minnesota Weber Music Hall in Duluth, Minn.
The 22,000-square-foot facility is a campus and community destination, accommodating an audience of 350 plus a 70-member orchestra and a 75-member chorus.
Designed by renowned architect Cesar Pelli & Associates, New Haven, Conn., the focal point of the facility is an angular dome covered with 12,000-square-feet of Prestige Elite copper-clad tiles. Prestige Elite tiles feature a 99.7% pure copper foil coating.
Architect of Record on the project was SJA Architects of Duluth.
According to Anne Haynes, Pelli design team leader, “The acoustical requirements of the orchestra dictated the architectural shaping. Since the music hall would be not only a showcase but also a resource for the arts for the entire region, it warranted a dramatic appearance. Copper is a classic material that is time proven and long lasting.”
The Jamar Company of Duluth, Minn. handled installation of the copper-clad tiles. Project manager Paul Zwak calls the building a “stunning project.” According to Zwak, “The angular dome has a large number of facets with coping assemblies forming complex triangular sections. The tiles installed quickly and easily using traditional roofing tools. It’s nice material to work with.”
The copper-coated tiles are constructed of eight layers of different materials including impregnated fiberglass and natural bitumen. Over time, the tiles will develop the distinguishing protective green patina that is admired on buildings worldwide.
Petersen Aluminum carries Prestige Elite and Prestige Compact copper coated tiles and ZT Compact zinc-titanium coated tiles. The tiles are dimensionally stable, are not affected by high temperatures and remain perfectly impermeable.
The ZT compact lines feature a 100-micron thick zinc-titanium foil coating and are also constructed of eight layers of different materials including impregnated fiberglass and natural bitumen. The ZT tiles are 5mm thick and will develop a gray/light blue patina that adds a “satin effect” to the finish. Both the copper and the zinc-titanium coated tiles are easy to install using traditional roofing tools and provide a long, maintenance free life.
Tegola Canadese, headquartered in Treviso, Italy is the leading manufacturer of bituminous tiles in Europe with a 43% market share.
