FIRM-FILL 3310, Keeps the Construction of a Student Housing Facility on Schedule|
The Purdue University Calumet Student Apartments is a 384-bed student-housing complex, but it isn’t your typical student housing. It combines apartment style living with a quiet, comfortable environment designed to support the success of its residents.
In order to offer students at the University of Purdue Calumet an ideal environment for academic achievement, the General Contractor, Gariup Construction, decided to use Hacker Industries, Inc.’s FIRM-FILL 3310 gypsum concrete floor underlayment. FIRM-FILL 3310 not only provides high compressive strengths for finished floor coverings, it also is an integral component of systems meeting IIC and STC sound requirements for quiet surroundings.
Indiana-based, Advanced Flooring Systems, Inc., who has been pouring Hacker Floor Underlayments for more than three years, was selected as the subcontractor to pour the 86,000 square foot project based on their expertise and recommendations.
As with the installation of any Hacker Floor Underlayment, the subfloor must be prepped and approved by the General Contractor. “Gariup Construction did a great job preparing the surface and the building prior to the installation of the underlayment,” said Craig Miller of Advanced Flooring Systems, Inc. “The floors were free of any debris, the building was enclosed including the roof, windows and doors, providing the optimum environment for pouring the underlayment. When our crews arrived at the jobsite they were ready to pour right away. It definitely helped keep the project on schedule.”
Undertaking the high-profile job required Advanced Surfaces to pour one wing at a time, approximately 20,000 square feet per day. The experienced crew of Advanced Flooring Systems primed the wood subfloor and poured FIRM-FILL 3310 at 3/4 inch-thick at a 1.9 mix design. To ensure consistency of the material throughout the building and to meet Hacker’s stringent quality control standards, psi slump tests were taken every 10,000 square feet.
The number one requirement of the General Contractor was to keep the construction on schedule so the housing facility would be ready to open its doors to new students by the end of July. “Advanced Flooring Systems, Inc. did a very good job of pouring the floors on this project. They helped Gariup Construction meet the building schedule by showing up on time and pouring what the schedule called for without any problems with the product, sand or machinery. We are extremely happy with the product and Advanced Flooring Systems,” said Chris Staes, Project Superintendent, Gariup Construction.
Since its introduction in 2003, FIRM-FILL 3310 gypsum concrete floor underlayment has set the bar in performance and reliability. The product offers compressive strengths up to 3300 psi and possesses over 83 UL listings. And, unlike lightweight concrete, FIRM-FILL 3310 is slightly expansive, so it does not shrink or crack when it sets allowing for improved acoustical performance. In addition, FIRM-FILL 3310 is specially designed to decrease the amount of water use, offering a quicker drying time without compromising the floor strength.
Both General Contractor and Owner of the building were extremely happy with the smooth and flat surface poured on the project.
With more than 22 years experience and over a billion square feet installed nationwide, Hacker Industries, Inc.’s line of poured gypsum concretes are the ideal choice for commercial, singlefamily and multi-family construction. Hacker Floor Underlayments provide exceptional compressive strengths matched with superior acoustical and fire resistance properties that are ready for virtually any finished floor covering.
