Resistant Flooring Meets Facility's Design And Aesthetic Needs

QIAGEN Sciences, the world’s leading provider of biotech products, recently completed construction of its new North American headquarters in Germantown, Maryland. This new, 190,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art research, manufacturing and production facility is strategically located on 26 acres in Montgomery County near its largest pharmaceutical customers.

The StonCor Group was the single-source provider of chemically resistant flooring in the new headquarters of QIAGEN Sciences.QIAGEN plays a vital role within the pharmaceutical industry as a manufacturer and distributor of advanced bio-technology equipment and technology. Their workstations and robotic systems are used by many of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies for the separation and purification of nucleic acids for use in DNA sequencing, gene chip analysis, genomics and drug research, biological research, therapeutics and diagnostics.

This new facility positions QIAGEN to become more closely involved with its North American customer base. It also allows QIAGEN to coordinate research and product development efforts to meet the stringent demands of the pharmaceutical processing industry.

The design and construction of this new high-tech facility was undertaken with the same commitment to innovation and quality that QIAGEN provides to each of its customers. The CDI Engineering Group of Philadelphia, Penn., was selected to lead this design and engineering effort. The team’s objective was to find contractors and suppliers who shared QIAGEN’s values of "timely, cost effective, high quality products with world-class manufacturing practices" to complete this project. For their flooring and lining needs, QIAGEN and CDI sought to find a single-source provider of chemically resistant flooring products which would also provide exceptional aesthetic qualities complementing the facility’s world class design.

With over 75 years of experience meeting the flooring and lining needs of the pharmaceutical and biotech industries’ customers world-wide, The StonCor Group proved a successful match. StonCor is an organization committed to innovation and excellence by providing cutting-edge technology, exceptional quality and unparalleled technical service. Two of StonCor’s divisions combined forces to provide high quality products that would meet the rigorous demands of this facility for longevity, performance, and aesthetic value: Stonhard® -- the world leader in high performance polymer floors, and Plasite Protective Coatings -- a pioneer in the development of high performance linings.

The interior design teams of QIAGEN and CDI Engineering required a highly durable, decorative solution for floors in the lobby area and corridors that also offered the flexibility of pattern design. Stonhard’s Stonblend GSI was selected due to its optimal aesthetic and wear-resistant properties.

Stonblend GSI is a seamless, decorative, troweled flooring system designed specifically to combine the performance of an industrial polymer floor with the aesthetics required in a high visibility, corporate environment. The Stonblend system was used to create various designs and patterns throughout the lobby and corridor areas.

Stonhard’s Stonblend GSI was used to create various designs and patterns throughout the lobby and corridor areas due to its optimal aesthetic and wear-resistant properties. The demanding environments encountered in the processing areas and research laboratories required an engineered product which met cGMP standards and provided superior chemical resistance and excellent cleanability. Stonhard’s Stonclad GS/Stonkote GS4 mortar system was selected to provide an extremely durable, impact resistant finish. This general service epoxy system was specifically formulated for applications requiring superior impact and abrasion resistance, good chemical resistance, and cleanability.

To protect the integrity and provide longevity of secondary containment areas, QIAGEN selected Plasite’s Semstone 656 system. Semstone 656 is a fiberglass reinforced, novolac epoxy lining system which provides a smooth, abrasion resistant, heavy-duty chemical barrier. This system is designed to resist cracking due to normal concrete shrinkage and moderate thermal shock, and to withstand exposure to concentrated sulfuric acid, chlorinated solvents and caustics.

A world class customer requires cutting edge products engineered for chemical resistance, longevity, durability and aesthetics. The StonCor Group provided a single-source project management solution for QIAGEN by coordinating every aspect of this project — from specification development to systems selection through the installation of the finished systems.

With over 400 project engineers and 150 installation teams worldwide, StonCor offers the same quality products and services around the world. The StonCor Group was proud to work side-by-side with the design and engineering teams of QIAGEN and CDI Engineering to provide an exceptional single-source solution for their flooring and lining needs.
