Environmentally Friendly Pavers Enhance Ballpark
Oriole Park at Camden Yards is one of the best ballparks in major league
baseball today. The state-of-the-art ballpark and surrounding areas have been
designed to offer plenty of enjoyment for Baltimore Orioles fans. The attractive
ballpark features a large area surrounding the park for visitors to relax and
spend time; turning a trip to the ballpark into an affordable, all-day family
event.
Included within this surrounding area is a large picnic space located left of
centerfield behind the bullpen, which can be rented for parties or for Orioles
fans to use at no addition cost with their paid admission to the park.

When the ballpark was initially built, stone was used to pave this area. In an
effort to make the picnic area at Oriole Park even more enjoyable for their
fans, the Baltimore Orioles and the Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA) made a
joint decision to retain the services of Beck Powell Parsons, Towson, MD, and
WBCM Engineers, Baltimore, MD, to re-design sections of the picnic area in
attractive, functional permeable pavers. Henry H. Lewis Contractors, Owings
Mills, MD, was the construction manager chosen to oversee the work being done on
the project.
Paving contractor, Interlock Paving, Inc., Baltimore, MD, elected to use the
patented AquaPave Permeable Paving System. The AquaPave System is a new,
environmentally friendly product that controls storm water run-off. With this
system, storm water can be reclaimed and reused, and prevent soil erosion. The
system uses a patented geotextile fabric that removes 99% of oil and
hydrocarbons, and up to 87% of heavy metals from storm water through microbial
action prior to returning it to the earth.
The AquaPave permeable paving system enabled MSA to use the existing underground
drain system, as well as to prevent any future storm water run-off issues. In
addition, MSA was looking for a paver system that was ADA compliant.
Interlock Paving began installing approximately 8,000 square feet of the
permeable pavers the first week of March, and scheduled to complete the entire
project by the end of March. A unique, attractive design was created using red
and charcoal matte pavers produced by Nitterhouse Masonry Products, LLC.
